Frequently asked questions with trigger point therapy

Q: Can I do anything at home to treat trigger points?

A: Foam rollers, massage balls, and new massage guns like the Theragun can help with home treatment of trigger points

Q: Is Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy painful?

A: We base our depth of treatment on your pain tolerance. Trigger points can be sensitive during the treatment when pressure is applied to them. Patients usually describe it as a hurt to feel good, but not a no pain no gain. Most patients will notice that after a few treatments, the same amount of pressure will not hurt as much, this indicates that the treatment is working.

Q: What is a knot?

A: Look at muscles as a bunch of lego blocks put together to make an object like a car. You see the car, but if you look closely you will notice that the car was made of smaller pieces. Let us take a muscle like your bicep it is made of tiny smaller connected pieces. The muscles have multiple tiny pieces that latch together like velcro. When you have a knot it is when a few of the blocks of velcro have held in a flexed posistion.

What are trigger points

Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain disorder. In this condition, pressure on sensitive points in your muscles (trigger points) causes pain in the muscle and sometimes in seemingly unrelated parts of your body. This is called referred pain which is one of many extremity nerve pain causes. This syndrome typically occurs after a muscle has been contracted repetitively. This can be caused by repetitive motions used in jobs or hobbies or by stress-related muscle tension.
