Frequently asked questions with Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Soft-tissue and muscle scraping

Q: Do I have to be bruised and in pain to get benefits from instrument assisted soft-tissue mobilization?

A: You are in luck because you can get great results working within your comfort zone. We always tell patients to try to let us work carefully into a little hurt to feel good, but never a no pain no gain. However, this is variable and each person should be listened to because they know their unique tolerance.

Q: What types of different techniques exist for instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization?

A: The top techniques are Gua Sha, Graston®, Técnica Gavilán®, Hawk Grips®, Functional and Kinetic Treatment and Rehab (FAKTR)®, Adhesion Breakers® and Fascial Abrasion TechniqueTM. We are certified with FAKTR and really loved the movement aspect it included while doing instrument assisted manual therapy.

Q: What do the tools look like and what are they made of?

A: The tools can vary significantly based on the type. Ours are stainless steel and look like a smooth butter knife with gentle edges. Other tools are: Buffalo Horn which originated from Chinese Gua Sha practitioners. Jade Tools that are much heavier and more slippery. Plastic tools are the newer designs on the market with wide variability, but they are mainly used for training. Stainless Steel Tools are the best tools for IASTM and scraping. The tissue responds well when the steel runs on it and they come in different sizes for different parts of the body.

Q: What is fascia?

A: Fascia is a covering around everything inside of your body and you can think about it like plastic wrap. It actually resembles a netted onion bag and spider web.

What is IASTM

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM) or scrapping is a new take on an old technique that uses tools to efficiently locate and treat individuals with muscle and soft tissue dysfunction. The technique itself is said to be a modern evolution from Traditional Chinese Medicine called Gua Sha. However, Gua Sha was not used to treat Musculoskeletal conditions but was traditionally applied along meridians to move the bad chi out through the skin Gua Sha can be a very aggressive technique as well. IASTM is a procedure that is rapidly growing in popularity due to its effectiveness and efficiency while remaining non-invasive.

IASTM is performed with ergonomically designed instruments that detect and treat fascial restrictions, encourage rapid localization, and effectively treat areas exhibiting scar tissue, chronic inflammation, or degeneration. It is a form of Manual therapy treatment and it works great combined with mobilizations and exercises.

It works by the instruments effectively breaking down fascial restrictions and scar tissue. The ergonomic design of these instruments provides the clinician with the ability to locate restrictions and allows the clinician to treat the affected area with the appropriate amount of pressure.

The introduction of blood flow to the affected soft tissue structure causes the stimulation of local inflammatory response. This jump-starts your healing process and helps your bodies' soft tissues heal correctly. Once the scar tissue and soft tissue are treated it allows for full function to return.
